I am currently using the Nikon Z8 camera and the Nikon Z 400mm f/4.5 lens for my wildlife photography. I purchased the 1.4 TC for instances when I require some additional focal length, especially for capturing smaller birds. This setup is relatively lightweight and perfect for my photography style, which often involves hiking or walking to various locations with my camera in hand. The first Z mount lens I purchased was the Nikon Z 50mm f/2.8, which I love for its versatility. When I'm not photographing wildlife, I use the 50mm lens to document my family life. The only F-mount lens I still own is the Sigma 105mm macro lens, which has become my second most used lens after the 400mm. When I purchased the Sigma, I was unsure how much I would use a dedicated macro lens. It's the perfect lens for macro photography and fantastic for portraiture.
Nikon ZFC
When Nikon released the ZFC, I fell in love with its retro style and old-school dials. As a result, I purchased the silver and white version with the 16-50mm kit lens to use as a second body. It is a fantastic little camera that I mainly use for family occasions, travel, and video. Whenever I am not shooting wildlife, the ZFC is my go-to option.I also own a Peak Design field pouch, which I use to store my batteries and memory cards in. When I am in a fast-paced shooting environment, I attach it to my belt for convenience and swift battery changes.
Other Accessories
I rely on the Gitzo 30L Adventury backpack for carrying my larger equipment. I'm particularly fond of its green colour and roll-top feature. Perfect for a nature photographer. This bag, consistent with Gitzo's reputation, is exceptionally well-crafted and effectively protects my gear from both moisture and potential damage. I always carry a LensCoat rain coat in my camera bag that covers both my camera and lens. When I need a tripod, I use the Manfrotto 190go. I purchased this for my macro work. Additionally, I have a Wimberley Sidekick for times when I want to mount my longer lenses.
Cotton Carrier
Towards the end of last year, I decided to invest in a Cotton Carrier G3 Harness, an item I had been considering buying for a long time. My primary reason for purchasing the cotton carrier was to use it during my pelagic trips. Finding a safe place to rest the camera on the boat can be challenging, but with the cotton carrier, I can have my camera attached to me, even when I need my hands free. It is also great for hiking, especially when I need my hands free to scramble up or down banks.
Wish List.
I am hoping to purchase the Nikon Z 24-120 f/4 this year. This focal length would be a versatile option for conservation assignments and a good all-rounder. Other lenses I would like: Nikon Z 600mm f/6.3 ( A bit ambitious! )Nikon Z 105mm macro f/2.8 ( upgrade ) Nikon 28mm f/2.8
